Carrier insights: Converting from AOBRD to ELD

By now, you are aware that electronic logging devices (ELDs) are a legal requirement. All trucks that don't have an automatic on-board recording device (AOBRD) should already have an ELD connected to their power unit.

However, folks with AOBRDs are going to have to make the switch soon. The deadline for all trucks to be fully integrated with an ELD is December 16, 2019.

As of now, it doesn't sound like any extensions are happening for the December deadline. It is advised that carriers get ELD connected now rather than later and risk being in violation.

Don't ignore the ELD learning curve

According to a CarrierLists survey, 52% of those who responded said they don't plan on completing their conversion to ELDs until the fourth quarter of 2019.

Some drivers think they have an ELD when really they have an AOBRD. An easy to know if you are not in violation is to check the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) and check their list of certified ELDs. If your device is not on the list, start taking steps to get the proper hardware for your power unit.

Another thing to be mindful of is the fact that ELDs affect carrier operations. Early adopting fleets who run the 500-mile to 700-mile range saw quite an impact. Driving routes can quickly go from one-day drives to two-day drives, potentially affecting load schedules later in the week and revenue.

Using the ELD to your advantage

Fortunately, there are some benefits gained once you connect your ELD.

Streamlining your workflows by digitally managing your fleet's data can optimize your carrier's operations.

With Shipwell, fleet managers can have visibility to all of their trucks and monitor them in-transit with real-time tracking via ELD connection. Shipwell is partnered with all of the leading ELD providers and is free for carriers to use.

Connecting Shipwell to your ELD gives you access to better loads and reduced deadheads. Our proprietary matching algorithm monitors over 700 data points to determine the best loads for the carriers, so you never have to go out of your way to pick up the next load.

Carriers who use Shipwell gain access to custom private Load Boards that our shippers and 3PLs populate with their freight. When carriers are given access to these private Load Boards, they can get great loads and not compete against hundreds of carriers the same way they do on a public load board.

Increase time and financial management

If you are a fleet manager, your drivers will love you once you connect the fleet's ELDs to Shipwell. Our tracking will be done in real-time through the ELD so they can say goodbye to all those check calls they are used to getting from 3PLs throughout their haul.
